Newell, Mabel Estella – Age 85 of Canso, Guys. Co. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their mother who passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2015 in Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso. Mabel was born in Canso, a daughter of the Late Walter and Mary (Spears) Swaine. She was known as a very generous person and would rush to help anyone in need. Mabel was well known for her delicious cooking and baking, especially her corn beef and cabbage. Mabel spent countless hours knitting socks, anyone who admired her homemade socks usually went home with a pair. Mabel is survived by her children; Eugene "Gene" (Sandra), Gary "Buzz" (Dorothy), Darin (Kelly) all from The Tickle; Donna Gurney, Little Dover; Gordon (Debbie), Cole Harbour; Natalie (Fred), Antigonish; April (Eddie) , Canso; 18 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great- grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren; her best friend Lorraine "Cookie" O’Leary and her cat, Boots; brothers, Ross (Mary), Jack; sisters, Elizabeth "Liddy" Foster, Julia Roberts, Florence (Ed) Bond and Norma Dobson. Mabel was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Arthur James Newell (2005); son-in-law, Wayne Gurney; brothers, Clarence, Douglas; sisters, Frances, Margaret, Evelyn and a baby who died in infancy. Mabel will be dearly missed by her family. Visitation will be held from 2-9 p.m. Tuesday, September 8 in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 9 at 11 a.m. in All Saints Anglican Church, Canso, with Rev. Sue Channen officiating. Burial in All Saints Cemetery, Canso.
