Munroe, Jackie Frederick Munroe "Fred" - 68, Canso, died peacefully on Friday, December 16, 2011 in the Aberdeen Regional Hospital, New Glasgow with his loving wife Vera "Vikki" Armsworthy by his side. Fred was born in Canso on May 30, 1943, he was the son of the late Earl Ernest and Edith Blanche (Richardson) Munroe. Fred was a lifelong fisherman, working as an inshore and offshore fisherman from the ports of Canso and Mulgrave and was a member of the Canso Guysborough Inshore Fisherman’s Association for 25 years. Fred finished his career as a crab fisherman and retired in 2007. Fred was also a member of the Canso Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years, and a member of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary for 11 years.
In 2006 Fred was one of four crewmen on his boat the "4 Sisters 1" who participated in the rescue mission of the pilots and crew of the helicopter CH-914 Cormorant of the 413 Squadron, CFB Greenwood which crashed in Chedabucto Bay. For Fred’s heroic efforts, he received one of the Canadian Coast Guards highest decorations The Commissioners Commendation; he also received the Operational Merit Medal from the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary President. In addition Fred was also awarded the Wing Commanders Commendation from 14 Wing Greenwood.
Fred’s generosity and kindness was best known for the "magic shed" days on Water Street, Canso, where he and his wife, Thelma opened their home to the surrounding area children where they, the children gathered to play pool, and where Fred was known as "Dad" to many.
In his younger years, Fred was involved with Minor Hockey as Referee and Chief, he chaperoned teen dances and was always there with advice or help for all who needed it. Since retirement, Fred’s daily ritual was to go to the "Breakfast Club" with the "Boys" and see what the latest news was; he enjoyed spending time with his friends and will be missed by all for his sharp tongue and quick humour. Fred dearly loved and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Jackie and Angel, fishing for Mackerel and driving his Challenger sports car.
Fred is survived by his wife, Vera (Armsworthy), son, Lloyd (Cara) Munroe, Dartmouth; daughter, Michelle (Alan) Hendsbee, Queensport, Guys. Co.; son-nephew, Earl Munroe, Saskatchewan; grandson, Jackie, and granddaughter, Angel Hendsbee, both at home, also many nieces and nephews, and relatives.
