Obituary
Please share a memory of Alexander to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
MACLEAN, ALEXANDER FRASER “Alexander Jimmy Angus”- 84, Big Harbour Island, Inverness Co., passed away peacefully on Friday, September 17, 2010 after a brief illness with cancer. Alexander was born in Sydney at the Old Salvation Army Hospital on January 22, 1926. He spent his whole life on the old homestead overlooking the Bras D’Or.
He steadfastly lived his life the “old way” with farming, logging, and fishing. Until he got his 1946 tractor in the late sixties, all hay making, planting and logging was done with horses. He loved nothing better than visitors, storytelling and a cup of tea. Wherever he travelled in Cape Breton he would talk to anyone “now who was your mother and who was your father?” remembering all the facts and details.
He is survived by his two daughters Ann Ruth , Halifax and Claire Alexandra , Antigonish; sister Katherine Isabel, Sydney; brother Angus Leroy, Victoria, BC. He was predeceased by his mother Anna Dolena MacKay, Big Harbour Island, his father James Donald MacLean, Valley Mills, and his sister Bertha Christine, Sydney.
The family gratefully thanks Dr. Chow and the nurses at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, and Dr. Ritter and the palliative care team for the wonderful and thoughtful care they gave to Alexander. Ann, Claire, and Isabel deeply appreciate the special devotion and care given to Alex by his care givers in Big Harbour Island: Beatrice MacKay and Alice Gowans. Alexander was grateful for the many friends and family who visited him during his illness.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the River Denys Presbyterian Church with Rev. Lloyd Murdock officiating. Burial to follow in the family plot in Malagawatch Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Valley Mills Fire Hall. All are welcome.
Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Malagawatch Cemetery Fund or Hospice Society of Victoria County. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
