Stone, Don - age 85 years, St. Peter’s. Don Stone, loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 surrounded by his family in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney after a brief illness. Born to the late Annie (Gosse) and Thomas Stone in Whitney Pier on July 30, 1929, Don Graduated from Sydney Academy in 1946 and continued his education at Dalhousie University, graduating with his Pharmacy Degree in 1954. After university, he moved to St. Peter’s and opened St. Peter’s Drug Store, from which he serviced the communities for 50 years. Don was considered a pillar of the community and was often referred to as the Mayor of St. Peter’s. Don was very dedicated to the community and people always came first. He was a lifelong Tory and was always on the phone chatting with friends on election night. His kindness and generosity were very evident to everyone to whom he met and worked with. He always looked forward to his trips to Florida and visits from his grandchildren. Don’s family meant everything to him and he was always so proud of all of them. For most of his working life he was very active in the St. Peter’s Village Commission, St. Peter’s Fire Department, St. Peter’s Lions Club, St. Peter’s Medical Centre, and numerous other boards. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Philae Shiners. He is survived by his wife, Marion (MacLeod), his sons and daughters, Donna (Dale) Machin, Blair (Cheryl) Stone, Parker (Fonda) Stone, Kirk Stone, Sherry (Ivo Winter) MacLeod, Sheldon (Lea-Ann) Stone, and Rhonda (Mitch) Craig. He is also survived by his 14 grandchildren; Ashley, Whitney, Raymond, Shannon, Molly, Taylor, Stacey, Stephanie, Steven, Beth, Kayla, Haley, Jillian and MacKenzie, eight great-grandchildren, his brother, Lloyd (Jessie) Stone, Baddeck; and his dog and best friend, Maggie. He is predeceased by his first wife, Connie (Smith) Stone. Don’s family would like to thank the Nurses and Doctors of St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish and the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Unit 4C for the wonderful and loving care he received for the past ten days. Visitation will be held in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 26 Centennial St., St. Peter’s from 5-9 p.m., Thursday, May 14, and 2-9 p.m. Friday, May 15, with funeral service to be held at St. Peter’s United Church on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverends Carolyn & Victor MacLeod officiating. Committal is following the service at Lakeview Cemetery and reception to follow at St. Peter’s Lion’s Hall. As per Don’s request, memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Cancer Centre or the St. Peter’s United Church.
