Sullivan, William Joseph "Joe" - 63, Guysborough, passed away peacefully in Guysborough Memorial Hospital on Monday, January 24, 2011 his family at his side. Born in Antigonish, he was a son of the late Donald and Sadie (Gillis) Sullivan of Roman Valley, Guysborough County. He received his early education in Guysborough and Antigonish County Schools. He was awarded his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Prince Edward Island in 1971 and his Bachelor of Education from St. Mary’s University in 1972. He taught senior high school Social Studies at Guysborough Municipal High School from 1972 until his retirement in 2002. During his teaching career he served on several provincial social studies task forces. Joe coached both high school soccer and softball teams to several provincial titles. He was recognized by the Nova Scotia School Athletic Association for his contributions to school sports.
Joe was very involved in his community. He played softball with the Guysborough Jost’s softball team in the early seventies and won many championships with that team. In 1978 he began coaching the Guysborough Con & Con Junior team and in 1980 the team placed fourth at the Canadian Junior Nationals. In 1984 the team competed in the Senior Men’s Canadian Nations and placed fourth. Upon his retirement, Joe became involved with the Meals on Wheels Program and the Guysborough and Area Food Bank and served as Chairperson of the Food Bank until his illness. He also served on Members Council of Feed Nova Scotia. Joe coordinated campaigns in Guysborough County for the Canadian Red Cross and the Diabetes Association and was a canvasser for the Cancer Society. Joe also served as facilitator for the Community Justice Forum and was a Justice of the Peace. Joe was an active member of the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia. He served as president of the Guysborough East Liberal Association and was the candidate for Guysborough riding in the 1988 election. Joe was a former member of the Chedabucto Curling Club, Guysborough Lions Club and a member of St. Ann’s Parish where he served as President of the Parish Council for a term. Joe touched and inspired many individuals during his life.
He was a loving and caring husband, father, brother and uncle who always had time for his family that he enjoyed so much. Survived by his friend and wife of 34 years, Janet (MacGillivary), son, Colin, Estavan, Saskatchewan and daughter, Andrea, Halifax; sisters, Kaye(Joe) DeRenzes , Florida; Mary (Harry) Schade and Anne (Terry) O’Leary, both of Halifax; Brenda (Doug) MacDonald, Lochaber, Antigonish Co.; Patricia (Lloyd) Hines, Guysborough; Helen (Donnie Harris) Sullivan, Antigonish; brothers, Alfie (Pheoma), Halifax; Donald (Shirley) Bridgewater and Ottawa; Hugh James (Monica) Antigonish; Gillis (Minnie) Roman Valley; Cameron (Sandra) and Gerald (Judy) Truro; Jack (Linda) Dauphin, Manitoba; brother-in-law Ted Larson, Halifax; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Maureen Sullivan-Larson.
Visitation will be held from 2-9 p.m. Wednesday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough. A service in celebration of Joe’s life will be held on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Guysborough with Father Bill Crispo officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made in Joe’s memory to the Guysborough & Area Food Bank or the Guysborough Memorial Hospital Foundation.
