O’Handley, Catherine "Isabel" - age 84, Canso, Guys Co. It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Catherine Isabel O’Handley, on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at Canso Seaside Manor Nursing Home, Canso, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born in Sydney Mines on November 26, 1930, Mom was the daughter of the late Richard and Margaret (Tutty) Vickers. Mom and Dad were married on April 27, 1953 and lived in Sydney Mines until moving to Antigonish in 1969. A stay at home mom until this time, she joined dad in the retail business where they worked at Alteen’s Jewellers in Antigonish. In 1972, they moved to Canso and there she worked for several years at the Bank of Montreal and then Canso Pharmacy from where she retired in 1994. She was a very active lady who loved to swim, skate and walk but she excelled at playing piano and entertained at many family and community functions and was organist at Star of the Sea Parish for a number of years. She is survived by her children, Donalda (Leo) MacGillivray, Antigonish; Brian (Susan), Kevin (Wanda), Richard (Anne Marie), Mary Louise (Carl) Bond, all of Canso and Blaine (Lisa), Antigonish; her 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Geraldine MacInnis, Sydney Mines; Yvonne (Duncan) McInnis, George’s River; Theresa MacLean, North Sydney; brothers, Richard (Marg), Sydney Mines and Father John, St. Catharine’s, Ontario; sisters-in-law, Frances MacDonald, Margaret Spiers, Marie O’Handley and brothers-in-law, Allan O’Handley (Judy) and Walter Magdy, numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald, in 2008; sisters, Betty (Jack) MacNeil, Margaret (Felix) Long; brother, Alex; sisters-in-law, Louise Dillon (Jim), Reynelda Bowen (Charles), Kay Magdy; brothers-in-law, Jack MacInnis, Roy MacLean, Harold O’Handley, Garfield MacLean, Joe MacDonald, Bob Spiers. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Canso Seaside Manor for the excellent care they provided to mom during her stay. Her body has been cremated. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, December 30, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, December 31, at 11:00 a.m. from Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Canso with Father Dan MacDonald officiating. A private burial of her ashes will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canso Seaside Manor, Parkinson’s Society of Canada or a charity of choice.
