O’Neill, Angus Aloysius – 92, Mulgrave, Passed away peacefully after a brief but tough battle in St. Martha’s Hospital on Monday, August 9, 2010. Born on April 30, 1918 in Mulgrave, he was the son of the late Samuel (Red Sam) and Catherine (Gillis) O’Neill. He worked with CNR in Mulgrave and transferred to Halifax with the end of ferry service in the Strait. Prior to joining CNR he was with the Canadian Armed Services based in New Brunswick. He sustained an injury returning from embarkation leave and always regretted not having being able to ship out with his comrades to overseas duties. He enjoyed his Irish roots and was well read on the history of the Irish. He was quick to point out inaccuracies related to the Irish including the spelling of the family name. He loved sports and as a teenager took the freight train to Frankville to play hockey where he picked up the nickname St. Patrick because of his shamrock sweater. He also played tennis into his sixties. He is noted for one particular play when, while playing opponents 30 plus years his junior, he returned a shot he had put ‘Irish” on and the ball crossed the net and returned without his opponents having touched it. He enjoyed listening to music, especially the Irish greats and the Tenors. But most of all he enjoyed his family and the many visits and he joyfully shared many stories of his parents, siblings, children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Philomena (Coady) of 57 years; daughter, Tara (Lawrence), Mulgrave; sons, Owen, Edmonton; Hugh (Gwen), Frankville; Liam (Wendy) Orangedale; Brendan, Halifax; eleven grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; sister, Emily Cohoon, Auld’s Cove and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his infant son Liam; sisters, Malinda “Molly” Strachan, Bernadette Spray, Angela MacDonald and Imelda O’Neill; brothers, Samuel, Anthony, Eugene, Leonard, Elmer, Ignatius “Nach”, Alphonsus "Phonse". The family wishes to thank the many caregivers at St Martha’s, who did their best to make dad comfortable during his recent hospitalization and also his stay in 2009. Special thanks to our sister, Tara, who was devoted to both dad and mom. We will miss his sense of humor, wit and practical jokes.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, August 12, from 2- 4 pm and 7- 9 pm in Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. Funeral mass will be held on Friday, August 13, at 11 am in St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, Mulgrave, Father Lloyd O’Neill officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Donations may be made in his memory to St. Lawrence’s Parish, Mulgrave or the Mulgrave and Area Resting Place.
