I’m so sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. He was liked by everyone. I met and worked with Jim for a short time at the heavy water plant. When I had to leave Cape Breton for work in Alberta in 1986, Jim dropped into my place to wish me the best; and I always appreciated that visit. RIP Jim.

Heartfelt condolences are extended to Mary, Sylvia, Mrs Jim et al. I recall a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning in February 1957 when Jim accompanied me, across the ice, to our old place on Corbett's Cove Road. We had recently moved to St. Peters and my intent was to check our old place to ensure that all was O.K.. I was 12 and I imagine Jim was 9 or 10. He brought along a guitar with an image of a covered wagon and a cowboy on the face of the instrument. In spite of his young age Jim was a bright lad. We reviewed a few guitar chords and spent a few pleasant hours together. I always had admired the Adams family so it was only natural that I would like Jim. He had music in his genes ( it's an Adams thing, you know ). St. Peters has lost one of it's finest sons. May God rest his soul. Permit me to conclude with a few lines from Robert Burn's A Cotter's Saturday Night:
From scenes like these old Scotia's grandeur springs,
That makes her loved at home, revered abroad
Princes and Lords are but the breath of kings,
An honest man's the noblest work of God................rest in peace, Jim.................Joe Stone

Growing up "Big Jim" was larger than life to me. He was a man of honor and someone who I always looked up to. I will always remember the great times I had around him during my youth, and what he had taught and instilled in me. My father Stephen, always thought of him as a true friend and one of the few people he could be himself and let loose around. My condolences to "the crew" and everyone who cared for him. St. Peter's lost one of their best and I know he won't be forgotten.

I know that Shemus loved all of you
He was rough around the edges , but his Heart was as big as all outdoors !
Jim was , a Father , Husband, Grandfather , and loved his family dearly ,there was no Mountian high enough , nor No Task he wouldnot tackle to ensure his Family came first !
As a friend I always asked about his Family ( Adams) and his reply was you mean Peggys' Girls ,refering to his Sisters, it was a running joke between us.
In conclusion let me say that Jim love his own family ! But he did love the family that he himself made with the love of his life Barb, just a tad more .
So Jim , see you all on the other side.
Barb , you know I,m here .

Barb & Family, you have all our caring thoughts at this time and expressions of LOVE, Carl & Michelle. One of Carls Memories of Jim is an article he wrote ..... LOVE
JIM and I at GOOD COUNSEL ACADEMY
August 1961
“Jim is this place ever a long way from nowhere!”
“Carl, you’re right, what the hell did our parents do to us, sending us
here to go to school in September?”
“I know my mother wants me to become a priest, so that is why I am
here. I’m sure Peggy wants the same for you.”
“Not a chance, I am not going to be a priest.”
“I don’t want to either, but now that we’re here what are we going to do
about it? I think we should look around and check the place out.”
“Sure, look around. This place is a dump! When were we to meet the
head monk?”
“I think it should be soon. When we were shown to our room I thought
we were to stay here till someone came to get us. Then we would be
shown around the place.”
“Things don’t move fast around here.”
The room became quiet as we just lay on our beds - thinking. A knock
soon came to the door. I said, “Come in.”
In walked this man all decked out in a light brown robe with a very long
rosary wrapped around his waist and part of it hanging down his side.
“I’m Brother Augustus. I’m here to show you around and take you to
meet the Prior.”
We followed like interested boys as Brother Augustus showed us
around. We were shown the church and told the times to be there each
day; 7:00 in the morning for mass, 6:30 for evening prayer, then 8:50
for night prayer. We saw the one classroom which was to be our school,
Good Counsel Academy, for grades nine through twelve. We were
interested in the gym as we did not have one at our school.
We continued on with our tour of the farm and shrine. We were
told we would be given work to do at one place or the other.
Once the tour was complete, we were taken to see Prior Frederick Peter.
He went over the rules. We would only be allowed to go home at
Christmas and the month of July. Otherwise we would be in school and
working on the farm. We could not leave the grounds of the monastery.
There was to be an entrance exam and aptitude test in two weeks. Our
acceptance at school would be based on the results of these tests. Our
work was to start the next day on the Shrine to our Lady of Grace.
Brother Augustus would show us what we were to do. Prior Peter told
us to go back to our room and pray. When the bell rang it would be
time to go to church after which we would have supper. So went our
first day at St. Augustine’s Monastery.
“JIM, did you hear what the prior said? We’re here till Christmas.”
“Over my dead body. No way am I staying here!”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, all the work, this crummy place, the rules, no girls…….. I’m not
staying here!”
“What do you mean, you’re not staying here? Our parents sent us here
to go to school. We have to stay. There’s no way out of it.”
“Oh come on, weren’t you listening? The prior said that our acceptance
at the school was based on the results of the exams in two weeks. All we
have to do is fail the exams and we’re out of here.”
“So how do we do that?”
“Jesus, Carl, you’re stupid! All you have to do is not answer the
questions correctly. If you know the answer, don’t put that down. Just
give another answer, one that sounds OK but is wrong.”
“OK, OK, take it easy. I can see this working, but what do we do till we
write the exams?”
“We just stay here and go along with whatever we have to do. It’s only
two weeks. We can learn how to play basketball and just snoop around.
This will be our vacation trip.”
Jim and I lay back on our beds and talked about things at home. We
were going to miss good swimming and fishing at the canal, but at least
we wouldn’t have to go to school here. Our plan was set. Would it
work?
We spent most of the next two weeks fixing the shrine, playing
basketball and going to church. Soon it would be time to write the
exams.
Brother Pius gave the exams to all the new boys like us. As it turned out,
they were easy exams to fail, multiple choice questions - just tick off the
wrong answer.
The next day we were called to the Prior’s office. Brother Pius started in
his Dutch accent, “I have never seen anyone do so badly on exams as
you two. Did you try to fail?”
We lied. We both said, “No.”
“Really, well you don’t appear stupid, but your marks are so poor we
can’t accept you at the school. We will have to call your parents to come
and get you.”
We had to wait a few days to be picked up, but the plan worked. We
were going home.
