I've just found this news. I knew Rilla from UNB days. She taught me how to make salmon loaf. I was lucky enough to visit Rilla and Jim in Port Hawesbury and was hosted wonderfully. She is missed.

It is with a heavy heart that I just learned of Rilla's passing. When my dad died, my Mum took my sister and I up to Plaster Rock for the summers to stay with Ben and Grace Flanders. We had many happy memories, including visiting the Tapley farm, and meeting Rilla and her family. I kept in touch over the years and visited Rilla whenever we were in Cape Breton. Rilla was a kind, caring person, with a big heart, who will be missed by all that knew her. Our condolences to Shirley, Joan, and family.

I have just viewed the Memorial Tribute in honour of Rilla, and it was wonderful. Rilla and I grew up in the same (approximately close) area here in Victoria County, and we both attended Tobique Valley Regional High School in Plaster Rock.
It was "neat" to see photos of years gone by.
I do not recall ever seeing Rilla when she did not have that wonderful smile, and joyous disposition.
Sincere sympathy to the members of her family, and may wonderful memories sustain you in the days and months ahead.
Sincerely, Kenneth Campbell

Terribly sorry to hear of Rilla’s passing. Rilla was such a great friend to our family for all of my life. I remember visiting with her and Jim on many occasions with my parents when we were growing up. Rilla was a very strong person and worked so hard at whatever she put her mind to. She really is an inspiration and will be sadly missed. May she rest in peace. – Colin Dawson

Shirley and Joan,
Rilla was a spark of sunshine in every situation, always cheerful, encouraging and full of fun. She would attempt anything. With Jim's help, she wheeled across the bridge from New Brunswick to Nova Scotia the day that it opened. She and Jim travelled to many places that those in her situation would find daunting. She excelled in everything she did. She educated the public and advocated for those who had limited mobility and was successful in having changes made in Nova Scotia. Those who knew her will not forget her. XOXOXOX

Shirley and Joan and family, please accept my sincerest condolences in the recent loss of Rilla. I learned today via a PR high school friend from years ago. Coincidentally, prior to learning this sad news, another friend from Saint John area sent me a picture of our high school volleyball team, and there was Rilla, our able , smiling team manager!
Rilla made an effort, which I appreciated, to reconnect in the past years, by phone and emails , and reminded me this past year that this year would be our 60 th high school grad anniversary and thought we all should get together. We were on the 50th.
Rilla had a kind, joyous, fun personality and was sincerely interested in others and their lives.
I am sorry she will no longer be with us physically to brighten others’ lives , but her friendship will be remembered and valued by all those who were fortunate to have known her.
We will remember her!

We last saw Rilla in the summer of 2020 during the first reprieve from Covid. It was a surprise visit and she was so happy to see us, as she always was. My closest cousin, Rilla was always special, as were Joan and Shirley. Uncle Ed and Aunt Glenda were such an influence on our lives, a haven of peace and order, and always good times. Rilla was ever up for an adventure, full of ideas for fun. Our lives dispersed, but the memories of early times remain very dear. I will miss you, Rilla, and carry you in a special corner of my heart. Kathy sends her love as well.

I had the pleasure of meeting Rilla at the Richmond Villa several years ago. I enjoyed talking to her and listening to her talk about her life experiences and the many places she travelled with her husband. She always asked about Mom and other family members and my husband and I were looking forward to seeing her in St Peter’s. Rest easy Rilla - we will remember you always.

So many treasured memories, Rilla was my first cousin and we shared many great memories growing up. Despite her limitations Rilla was a spitfire, always positive and pushing herself to succeed. In High School she couldn’t play sports so she became manager of our basketball and volleyball teams. That was the start of a life with amazing accomplishments, she was so inspiring to all those who knew her. I will so miss those phone calls from Port Hawesbury, Rest In Peace my dear cousin.

Rilla was such an amazing person, we hardly know where to begin. She was so involved in so many things in spite of her physical limitations. We first met her when the Port Hawkesbury Literacy Council was formed over forty years ago. We all spent much time tutoring, including a Vietnamese family. Her contributions as a volunteer are invaluable. And Jim was such a wonderful support to her. She will be deeply missed by so many but forever loved.
Out deepest condolences to all the family,
Kevin and Therese MacDonald, Port Hawkesbury
