CHARLTON, GLENDA - Age 84
Dearest Mum and beloved wife of 57 years to William Charlton ( predeceased) passed away at St. Martha’s Hospital on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 with her youngest daughter at her side. The third child of James and Isobel Cardwell ( nee Hill) of Dundee, Scotland . Born Mach 19, 1932 and beloved Mum to Gail (Roger ) McMullan of London, England , Elaine, Halifax, and our brother Paul ( predeceased) laid to rest in Dundee, Scotland. She is survived by her sister Veronica Cambridge (Nee Cardwell) in Cambridge, England, Maureen Charlton and Jennifer Charlton, sister in-laws all of Scotland. Predeceased by her brother David Ross Cardwell, and Kathleen Cardwell, Helen Marie Cardwell and brother in – law John Cambridge. Also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews in UK.
Glenda was educated in Dundee, Scotland; trained and graduated nursing in Kings Cross Hospital Dundee, Scotland. In 1969 Glenda and her 3 children emigrated to Canada joining our Dad, William “Bill” Charlton, whom arrived in Canada a year previously. Glenda worked as a sales associate at Sears before pursing a career in Records Management with AECL ( Atomic Energy of Canada). She was later employed at the Library at NSCC Nautical School.
Glenda was active in both Embers (formally Brownies) ,and Girl Guides , and elevated to the position of District Commissioner, dedicating 33 years working with young people in the Girl Guides. In the 1970’s she was a member to Toastmasters. Glenda also attended several Girl Guide conferences locally and across Canada. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary - Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43. In 2003, Glenda was awarded the Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee Medal at a ceremony in Halifax where the former Lieutenant Governor Myra Freeman presented her with the medal. Glenda was also awarded 50 year pin for her dedication to Girl Guides with a Life Time Membership. She was also a member of St. Joseph Parish in Port Hawkesbury where she taught Religion and organized a Christmas Pageant, where she designed costumes. Her talents had no bounds , she was a seamstress , skilled knitter and crafter . Our Mum participated in a over 40-year-olds pageant and crowded Queen - at Branch 43 Legion. Mum and Dad hosted annual Burns Suppers in their home. We had many trips to the UK to keep our family connection to Scotland.
Through out her life Glenda made many lifelong friends. She had special angels looking after her in the last two years of her life, Maia , Norma and Jeanette . They gave her joy each day. Our family and her lifelong friends will mourn the loss of such a well loved woman. Funeral service will be held at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at 10:00 am. Family flowers only. Donations can be made to Operation Smile Canada.
