Melvin "Mel" Maurice Haywood - Boylston, Guysborough County, Age 75. Today Friday, March 10, 2023 the Haywood family along with our Aunt Gertie Carr with broken hearts wish to announce the passing of our beloved brother and nephew, Melvin “Mel” Maurice Haywood, born on, May 10, 1947 to the late Helen (Carr) and Hilton Haywood of Guysborough Co., NS.

Mel is survived by his loving Aunt Gertie Carr, (his buddy); brothers, Ross, Ray, and Thomas (Darlene); sisters, Mary (Harold) Chisholm, Lorraine (Bryce) Sanford, Diane (Wayne) Decoste and many nieces and nephews. Mel will be missed as well by his best friends; John Campbell and Gary McNeil.

Besides his parents Mel was predeceased by, his beautiful, loyal, and loving “Lady” (his pet dog); Mel’s sister, Patricia (Bill) Canty; brothers, Howard (Josephine) Haywood, Ernest (Bonnie) Haywood, Carl (Susan) Haywood, Cyril (Barb) Haywood, and Samuel Haywood; nieces, Paula Chisholm, Wendy Chisholm; nephews, Chad (Tonya) Haywood, Nathaniel Haywood and Joseph Eggstaff, Mel’s sister in-law, Bernice (Ray) Haywood and sister in-law, Norah (Ross) Haywood.

Mel touched many lives with his wonderful humour, his beautiful character, and his artistic qualities, from his beautiful beech wood sculptures to his enchanting landscape at home.  Mel’s true love was to entertain his family and friends with his funny jokes and the hilarious way of telling stories about lives or events he experienced, always had everyone laughing. Mel had a loving nature and his love could be felt by his loving family, friends, as well as his sponsored little girl in India and his little friend (dog named Lady).  His fondest occasion would probably be ‘Halloween’ as he loved to dress in costume and attend the Mardi-di Gras in Halifax.

Mel was an adventurous soul from day one. After graduating, Mel’s career included working on the Bluenose Ferry travelling from Yarmouth to Bar Harbour, Nova Scotia Light & Power and Dept. of Highways. He then decided he needed to have an adventure, so off he went to Spain, from viewing the rock of Gibraltar, riding a camel in Morocco, to visiting the turquoise mines and negotiating with the Native Americans (Mel so enjoyed) in the mountains of Nevada and Arizona working with his brother Ernie. After returning to Canada and exploring Vancouver, Mel moved on to Halifax where he studied barbering & hairstyling receiving his Barbers Certificate and joining his brother at Tom’s barbershop “Hair’s To Ya!” on Quinpool Road. Until 1997, Mel decided it was time to open his own barbershop in Boylston, Guysborough Co. to be near and care for his Mom for her remaining years.

Mel would like to thank all of his clientele for their loyalty and friendships which allowed Mel to succeed in his endeavour until his retirement in Dec. 2022 due to illness.
 

Mel would like thank, so very much the doctors, nurses, and staff of Guysborough hospital for their compassion and personal touch in caring for him during his time of illness.

Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2023 in St Francis of Assiss Roman Catholic Church, St. Francis Harbour.

Burial to follow in the Parish Cemetery. A reception will follow the burial in the Parish Hall.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Mel to St. Francis of Assisi Cemetrey Fund, St. Francis Harbour.
