John William (William) MacKinnon
September 7, 1946 – April 3, 2023
John William MacKinnon passed away peacefully at Tri-EW Bickle Center for Complex Continuing Care, Toronto, Ontario; formerly of Queensville, Cape Breton. He was born in Inverness, Nova Scotia to the late Allen Charles and Christie MacKinnon.
He was a member of the International Operating Engineers as a heavy equipment operator. William began working at a young age and had his first truck, a 1961 Mercury, single axle dump truck. In his early career, he worked in Ontario trucking. He worked at the smelter in Sudbury, Ontario before returning to Cape Breton to start his family. He had worked on many construction jobs and one he was quite proud of was the work he did when Nova Scotia Power expanded the substation in Port Hastings, Nova Scotia.
He facilitated a heavy equipment operator training program in the 70’s in the local area. He was mechanically inclined, and he said that he loved to play in the mud with any big machine. He enjoyed skidooing and fixing old cars.
William is survived by his daughter, Sylvia (MacKinnon) Phee (John), their children, Chantal and Jordan. His brother, Perley MacKinnon, Sister-in-laws, Julia MacKinnon and Pauline MacKinnon; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. And a longtime friend that helped him during his illness, Elaine MacDonald.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, William Bradley MacKinnon, brothers, Walter, Murdo, and Seward. His sister, Mary Jess MacDonald. Brother-in-law, Edward MacDonald, sister-in-law, Marie MacKinnon. Nephew, Perley MacKinnon Jr. And Niece, Allena MacDonald.
