It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Roy Burton Simpson, 99, of Manchester, Nova Scotia, who passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug 18, 2023, in Seaside Manor in Canso, with family by his side.

Born on April 15, 1924, in Boylston, NS, Roy was the son of the late Burton (Manchester, NS) and Jane (Martin), (Cupids, NL) Simpson.

He is survived by his sons, David Simpson, Gary Simpson (Beverly); foster daughters, Margaret Johnston, Florence Cameron, and Carla Johnson; grandchildren, Danielle Marple (Brendan), Shannon Simpson, Matthew Simpson (Kara Gibbs), Joshua Simpson (Molly Leadlay), Jennie Arsenault (Lucas), Amy Morell (Ross), Crystal O’Connor, Alissa O’Connor (Mark), Nick O’Connor (Amy), Kayla O’Connor (Charles); he also leaves behind 20 great-grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Beloved husband of the late Dorothy Hope Simpson (Hull), Roy was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy; his sisters, Beulah Paisley, Violet Wallace, Olive Gardener, Lillian Nickerson, Edna Simpson, and brother, Albert Simpson.

In his early years, even as the youngest child in his family, Dad was an independent and mature young man who enjoyed work and learned the value of hard labour, often working in the woods and assisting his father any chance he could. Dad often said, “If you love your job, that’s half your pay.”.

On his 18th birthday, Dad enlisted in the military, joining the Toronto Scottish Highlanders Regiment MG Liberation of the Netherlands. He saw active combat in England, France, Germany, Belgium, and Holland for the duration of WWII, before returning to Canada in 1945. He then set out for Halliburton County, Ontario to help his sister and brother-in-law build rental cottages in Hall’s Lake before returning home, where he met his wife, Dorothy Hope Hull.

Married January 10, 1950, Roy and Dorothy became proud parents a few years later to David in 1953 and Gary in 1955. They went on to foster children, where they graciously welcomed daughters, Florence, Margaret, and Carla, into their home. He and Mom were inaugural members of the Manchester Boylston Fire Department and spent much time together at the Chedabucto Curling Club.

Dad was well respected in his community, often receiving visits from even the youngest members. Hero, friend, and Papa, too many, he was known to leave an impression; often greeting you with a firm, knuckle grinding handshake and a grin.

Dad was a jack of all trades, though he would say, “Master of none!”. We all tend to disagree. He was a self-taught carpenter, mechanic, farmer, gardener, strawberry producer, winemaker, maple syrup legend, and master dog trainer. He was a dart and crokinole champion; often playing on the crokinole board he made himself, at age 12. He also raised fish, with various ponds dedicated to them on his property.

Dad loved to fish, especially aboard the Misty Morn 1 with his boys. He enjoyed spending days at the camp in North Ogden, sitting on the deck drinking a glass of his own homemade rhubarb wine with his beloved dog, Jed, by his side, who predeceased him by only 3 days.

Many thanks to the staff at Seaside Manor who cared for him during his stay, and to the women who made it possible for Dad to stay in his home as long as he could. We would like to personally thank Pearl, Sharon, Mary, Elaine, Kim, and Marion, and all who were involved in his care.

Cremation has taken place, there will be no funeral service as per his wishes. A burial service for the family will be held on Saturday, August 26th at 11 a.m. with Rev, Heather Manuel officiating.

A public Celebration of Life to follow at the Boylston Community Centre from 2-4 p.m.

We have received many messages, speaking volumes to the kind and gentle character of our beloved father and grandfather. It truly warms our hearts and brings a joyful tear to our eyes. He will be dearly missed by his family and his community. Rest peacefully, now, dearly departed Soldier. Thank you for your service, and sacrifice.
