Please share a memory of Marion to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

                                                                                 Marion Shirley (Embree) Langley

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Marion Shirley (Embree) Langley, 98, of Port Hawkesbury, on Tuesday, August 22, 2023. She was affectionately known as Mom, Nanny, and Aunt, and was renowned for her exceptional apple pies and candies.

She was born in Port Hawkesbury in 1924 to Eppisana (Hennessey) and Robert Embree. Her childhood memories with Helen, Art, her cousins and trips to her grandmother’s house in Sunnyside were some of her favorite stories to tell.

Marion met the love of her life, Dave when he sat behind her in the three room school house and put his stinky boots under her chair, not many love stories start with “well I remember how smelly his boots were”.  Excited to start their new lives together, but waiting until the war was over, the two were married on May 16th, 1945.

Marion was a WREN during WWII, stationed in Cornwallis, Halifax and for a time at RCAF Station Moncton.

Marion and Dave were immensely proud of their children; Elizabeth and Russell and their grandchildren Stacey and Craig, who meant the world to them. She cherished her time with all of them, spending many a summer camping.  She was thrilled when she became a great grandmother to Aiden and loved his visits.

More than a homemaker, Marion was the unofficial bookkeeper for Dave’s BA/Gulf gas station on Granville St.  Everyone who knew Marion knew how much she loved knitting, sewing, reading, solving puzzles and trying new recipes.  She also loved the outdoors, from swimming by the big rock in Sunnyside, to camping, snowmobiling up Creignish Mountain, skating, and impromptu road trips, there were always adventures to be had.

Marion will always be remembered for her baking, especially her chocolate chip cookies and apple pies and of course her Christmas candy.

We couldn’t have asked for a better Mom or Nanny, and will miss her every day. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.

Marion was predeceased by husband Dave, sisters, Mabel (Maurice) and Helen (Fred); brothers, Art (Barbara), Robert and Ellsworth and brother-in-law Angus.  Marion is survived by her sister Catherine; children, Elizabeth (Bill), Russell (Carolyn); grandchildren, Stacey (Joey), Craig (Stephanie);  great grandson, Aiden; sisters-in-law, Marg and Shirley and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

We would like to thank everyone at the Admiral LTC for their care, compassion and making her feel at home.

Celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, August 29 at 1pm in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Donations to the Poppy Fund – Royal Canadian Legion or a charity of your choice.
