1951-2023

With profound sorrow we announce the passing of beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend Lloyd Patrick Hines, 72, of Guysborough, NS. Lloyd passed away peacefully on Monday, September 11, 2023.

Lloyd was born on June 19, 1951 in Neil’s Harbour, NS and spent his early childhood in Ingonish, NS. His late and beloved mother, Hazel, shared many stories of a young Lloyd roaming the craggy cliffs of Cape Smokey, endeavouring to quell an endless supply of energy, intelligence and curiosity. (See also: Up to no good.)
 
After graduating from Baddeck High School at 16, Lloyd earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at St. FX University. A proud X graduate and lifelong learner, Lloyd expanded his education through the years with courses from UCCB, SMU, University De Moncton and Queen’s. He had an insatiable passion for reading, and giving and receiving books became his language of love.

In 1973, Lloyd met the love of his life, Patricia, a blue-eyed beauty from Roman Valley, NS. Lloyd and Patricia married in 1976 and eventually settled in Guysborough, NS to raise their growing family. Of his many accomplishments, Lloyd was most proud of his 47-year marriage to Patricia; his love of his four children, Sarah, Shannon, Victoria and Regan; and his role of Papa to three granddaughters Nola, Carlin and Quinn.

Lloyd approached family life with characteristic tenacity and sentimentality. The Hines family home was filled with love and a fundamental tenor of tolerance and service to others. Lloyd and Patricia shared impressive culinary talents and enjoyed being in the kitchen together, from their earliest days as a couple to the final days of their marriage.

Music was staple in Lloyd’s life, his expansive record collection providing perfectly curated soundtracks to birthdays, dinner parties and family celebrations. It was not uncommon to catch Lloyd crooning, often to his favourite artist John Prine, which inevitably led to a line-by-line lesson in Prine’s lyrical brilliance. Lloyd's children will forever be grateful to witness his passion and inherit his appreciation for beauty in music, art and words.

Any time with Lloyd was stimulating, whether he was sharing stories from his childhood, his latest artistic hobby or his distinguished and interesting career.

Lloyd’s passion reflected in his professional life, starting first in the energy industry with Irving Oil. After moving to Guysborough, Lloyd established a connection to the community through entrepreneurship, most notably as the proprietor of the Belmont Resort and Golf Course. Lloyd’s stewardship of the Belmont was an enormous source of pride. He relished the opportunity to promote Guysborough’s natural beauty and hospitality to the rest of Nova Scotia and world. He deeply valued the lifelong relationships built with Belmont staff and members.

Lloyd was unwavering in his belief in the power of public service to affect positive change. In 1982, Lloyd became a School Board Trustee, beginning a 40-year calling to governance. He was elected as a Councillor to the Municipality of Guysborough in 1988 and voted as Warden in 1997. He served on Council for 25 years, leading a period of economic growth in Guysborough unprecedented for rural Nova Scotia. Lloyd served as President of the Federation of Canadian Municipality and the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities (UNSM), as well as an advisor on many Boards.

In 2013, Lloyd entered Provincial politics. He was first elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly as MLA for Guysborough-Eastern Shore-Tracadie in 2013 and re-elected in 2017. He has served as Minister of Natural Resources and the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal and Caucus Chair to the governing Liberal Party under the leadership of Premier Stephen McNeil.
 

Lloyd treated his service to his community as an honour, bestowed to him by constituents and colleagues who became cherished and respected friends. Lloyd had an intrinsic understanding of life’s obstacles, and believed deeply in his duty to help. His convictions, love and wisdom will continue to inspire us for decades to come.

Lloyd is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patricia, with whom he shared a deep and enduring love; his children Sarah (Jeremy), Shannon Cleary (Tommy), Victoria and Regan (Jordan); granddaughters Nola, Carlin and Quinn; brothers Kevan and Fred; as well as many treasured extended family and friends.

Lloyd was predeceased by his mother, Hazel Delores Hines, who died 2004, his father Raymond, who died in 1989; and his baby sister Karen, who died in 2006. 

A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 14 from 4-6pm at DesBarres Manor, 90 Church Street, Guysborough, NS. Funeral will take place on Friday, September 15 at 1pm at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 86 Church Street, Guysborough, NS followed by a reception at 3pm at the Chedabucto Lifestyle Complex (CLC) 60 Green Street, Guysborough. Lloyd will be laid to rest at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in a private burial following the reception.
