Obituary of Howard Miles George
GEORGE, Howard Miles – Age 89, of Philips Harbour, Guysborough Co., passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 8, 2023, in Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso, with his family by his side after a brief illness. Born on February 7, 1934, he was the son of the late William and Lillian (DeRabbie) George. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen George; daughter, Colleen (Alden); son, Myles (Tamitha); granddaughter, Shyanne (Justin); great-grandchildren, Kylie and Weston.
Howard was a self-taught man, always reading up on things and then doing them himself. He grew up at a time when there was no money to hire someone, so if you needed something done, you did it yourself. As a teenager he helped to dig the holes for the power poles to bring electricity to Philips Harbour. He served as a Signalman in the Canadian Army serving from 1953 to 1956.
He tried his hand at many things, artistic painting, he was excellent at fly tying and enjoyed his fishing trips to Margaree and the Salmon River. He loved carving figures out of wood, playing his guitar and enjoying music, walks in the woods and feeding the birds. He even tried his hand at boxing in his younger years.
Howard was a quiet, intelligent man, never one to brag or boast. He built the house where he and Eileen spent their final decades together in peace, always warm and welcoming their children home for visits. There younger years were more adventurous as evidenced by the time they both quit their jobs and hopped on a train to California.
He worked numerous jobs in his career, including an excellent Auto Body Technician with Bob McDonald Chevrolet, a qualified Machinist with the top marks in class, then employed with the Ship Repair Unit Atlantic at the Canadian Forces Base and he finished his working career as a Security Guard Commissioner at the Canso Fish Plant.
Visitation will take place from 2-5 p.m. on Friday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough and from where the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday with Rev.
