Oh Joe... I rember us chatting about the old 475 big block corvette. You told me it would pull the front wheels. After much arguementive discussion we went for a ride.. you kicked it and up it went.. don't know how many folk knew you back them years ago.. you were such a precision nut.. everything to the spec.. I am so sorry to hear of your passing. I feel very sad to hear this belated news and always considered you a friend that If in need I could call. I am so saddened for Sara and your children. I truly hope somewhere you are pulling it into second and getting the front wheels real light! Joe I will always remember and now sadly miss you. Take care old friend wade

Sara, Kaylee (Andrea), Brennan (Venus) and extended family;

Sara and all the Murphy family,
We were so sad to hear of Joe's death. He was a very nice man. Often when Joe came to PEI he made time to stop into visit our parents Joe and Eileen MacVarish. I first met Joe in September of 1994. In addition to being a nautical instructor, Joe was a pioneer in the use of ship manoeuvring simulators in Canada. It was Joe that opened my eyes to all that we could accomplish with simulation, and he was indeed my first, and most important mentor in this area. Joe’s inspiration and dedication, served as the catalyst that prompted me to form by own company and to pursue a career as a simulator instructor and manoeuvring consultant. About 15 years later, by son, Evan also became one of Joe’s students when he was a cadet at the Nautical Institute. We are among the many mariners that Joe helped to shape and inspire. While Joe may no longer be with us, his wisdom and kindness are still sailing the seas.

It was great to meet Joe at NSCC working alongside with him. Anytime you needed to have a fantastic chat with someone, Joe was always right there. He put smiles on everyone’s faces everyday and made everyone laugh with his humour.

Sara and family,
I am deeply saddened to hear of Joe’s sudden passing. I worked at NSCC for many years, Joe always had lots of stories to tell and knew how to put a smile on someone’s face. Often Joe would talk about his children with great pride and it was so clear to see the love he had for you, Sara. Many a pair of shoes he would come in show me. Many, many fond memories.
