Obituary of Arthur Glen Ehler

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Arthur Glen Ehler, age 59, of Whycocomagh, Nova Scotia. Born on April 21, 1964 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, he was the son of Tina and the late Denton Ehler.

Arthur spent his childhood and rebel teenage years in Herring Cove, graduating from JL Ilsley High School and then working alongside his father at the Oland’s brewery for a number of years, likely sampling a few brews while oh shift as a way of his very own quality control, he was always concerned about people’s safety. He then went on to work at the Scotia Bank where he met the first love of his life, his beloved 84 Camaro which he pampered like a newborn child. Art then moved to Cape Breton and never left. It was there that he met his partner in crime and the true love of his life Elaine, and they were inseparable ever since. Often, she begrudgingly left their three cats (which he loved like children) behind, joining him at one of his numerous car shows (“This is the last one of the season, I promise”), or a boat cruise, you could always find them together.

Art was a bus driver with the Strait Regional Centre for Education for over 20 years. He loved this job, and greeting the kids each morning was the highlight of his day. He always boasted about how the kids on he runs with the most respectful and well-behaved kids around.

Anyone who knew Art knew about his love of vintage muscle cars. His babies were his 84 Camaro and his ’85, ’04 Corvettes, which he kept in mint condition. He and Elaine loved taking them out for a rip, of course with the best of the 80s rock playing. He loved being in his garage with his brother Denton, having a couple of cold ones and making sure the cars were shining and meticulous.

Art eventually decided to take his love of cars and turn it into a business. He started Art Ehler’s Auto Sales and loved every day that he spent on his passion. For as much as he loved cars, he loved the social aspect just as much. Whether chatting (he loved to chat, and chat) with other dealers through auctions, connecting with people on Marketplace or Kijiji, or through his numerous customers, he loved chatting with and talking cars with everyone and anyone.

Art loved his family fiercely. He was a dedicated brother to Randy and Denton, and father to Elaine’s boys, Ivan and Billie, as well as Alicia Cowan. Art was always there for them, day or night… always.

He was adored by his grandsons, Rowan and Rory. Art always spent as much time as he could with the boys and many a soccer game was had in the basement, with Art always somehow just barely losing every time. They loved to convince him to sit and watch them playing video games and he thoroughly enjoyed watching them play hockey on his numerous trips to the city.

As an uncle, friend, coworker, and fellow firefighter Art could always be trusted to be there whenever needed. He was so honoured and proud to serve his community as a volunteer fire fighter alongside the other members and would never say no to a call.

Please join us for a celebration of life at the Whycocomagh Firehall on Saturday, December 2 starting at 1 pm. There will be words of remembrance given by his sons at 2pm, followed by anyone who would like to tell a story about Art. A burial will take place at Stewartdale Cemetery after the ceremony for family members and close friends. Donations call be made to the Whycocomagh Education Centre Breakfast Program.
