Gary wad an incredible man with a big heart. I’ve been a part of this family for 27 years and every time we visited Guysborough, I always looked forward to seeing Gary. You could always laugh or chat about anything…and he gave the best hugs. His birthday falls on the same day as our oldest son and whenever we were in Guysborough on the 23rd, Gary so graciously shared his cake and the spotlight with Avrey. Yet another example of Gary’s kindness and thoughtfulness.
To Andrew, Steven, Meghan, and Nicole, your father loved you dearly and always spoke of you all with pride. We all are so lucky to have been blessed with Gary touching our lives. He was a special person and has thankfully passed these beautiful traits on to his children.
Much love,
Jodi MacMaster

My son Liam and I are heart broken at the loss of our cousin. While we can't be with his family and many friends in Nova Scotia. We are sending our deepest sympathy, and sincere condolences. It doesn't seem real that Gary has passed. He was a North Star for me my entire life. If I needed a guide to know what the right path to take was in life. All I had to do was look to my cousin Gary. He treated me like a little brother. And I loved him with all my heart!
Anyone that knew Gary, understood how gentle and caring he could be. A man to offer support, and give genuine help when you were in need. But Gary was also brave and as tough as they come.
While we were kids playing down at the harbour one early spring. His dog Skip started chasing a herd of deer up the river, and they struggled on the ice while coming our way to the harbour. Gary knew Skip could be in jeopardy for messing with deer. And instantly went into action to make sure his Pal didn't get in trouble. While trying to get Skip separated from the Deer. Both Gary and a Doe went through the ice. Well I wanted to help, but he is smashing more ice than an Ice Breaker coming my way to shore trying to get to solid material, and get purchase to hoist out. Which we all know he eventually did. Now I was freakin out, and he was wide awake himself! Standing on ice soaked to the bone! But he was no city kid, and off comes his clothes, And he and I wrung out his clothes as he is standing bare assed, and bare foot on the ice. The only thing I had that would fit him was my hat and mitts from Nanny MacMaster that Christmas. But rather than dash for home, he got a pole to try and get the deer out. And when it didn't work with the Deer more afraid of us than drowning. He backed off. And we retreated to the shore and hide and watched. Now he is in clothes turning to a suit of ice armour! Yet he was so tough and so concerned that he waited until that Deer got out. Only then did we head up to the house. And of course he pulled that sled that took us down. That was Gary Mac!
If I didn't know before, I knew after that. Just how amazing my cousin Gary was.
What a privilege its been to be around Gary. One of my true blue Hero's. And among the best to come out of Guysborough County in 300 years. I am so grateful to have had you as my guide. I wish I'd been a better student. But you never gave up on me. That is not what Gary MacMaster does!

Gary was indeed a kind soul. I called on his expertise many times, even once to take out a light bulb that had broken off in the socket. After that earth shattering experience it was time to relax. That meant having a chat, drinking coffee and eating cookies. Fun times.
Gary, you will be missed.

l had first met Gary as he was building his house that he lived his life in and had his family, not long after I had married his sister in law Carol Halpenny. He was a good man in all respects and a person to give to you when you just needed to talk.
He will be missed by all that knew him mostly because he was a true person to be counted on at any situation.
He is now with family in the house not made by hands waiting to greet us when our time comes.
Will see at some point in time Gary Rod White your brother in law and masonic brother

Our family was extremely saddened and shocked to hear about Gary's sudden passing and wish to express our heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time. Gary was truly a very special person and the void left by his passing will be deeply felt by the entire community. When we decided to renovate our cottage in 2014, Gary was our contactor and my husband Ted was very pleased with having Gary do the work as Gary was very much a perfectionist. Our cottage is one of many renos and builds which are a testament to his skill. In a stack of Sceles Family pictures, we found one of Gary around 4 years old, sitting outside on the steps of the old cottage, eating an ice cream cone. We had a copy made for Gary. . Even at age 4,this dear little boy who grew up to be a remarkable man , knew how to enjoy life's simple pleasures.
Rest in peace, Gary, as you will be dearly missed.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Gary’s passing. I have many happy memories of my visits to Guysborough when he joined us at cousin Sharon and Wendy’s for meals, Christmas celebrations or for quiet evenings, having a glass of wine around the fire in the beautiful home he built. Occasionally, he drove me to the airport and I was always grateful for his generosity. Nothing seemed too much for Gary. I will remember him as a gentle, loving, kind and faith filled man whose presence made a difference in the lives of many people. May he rest in peace.

I met Gary through the curling club. He had a calm and steady presence that was so authentic. People spoke highly of him and it didn't take long to see why that was. I witnessed Gary's sense of community through the playful, painted works of art that he made and installed at the Boylston Park. A very selfless gesture. He will be missed by many.

I’m so truly sorry to hear of Gary’s passing. He was the best; humble, loving and caring. Many of us will us around the lake will feel the void he has left. They’ll never be another Gary that’s for sure. As children, during our summer visits we spent alot of time building life long memories from jumping from the hayloft to fun down at the lake. They’ll be a major void left around the lake that will never be filled. RIP my friend, till we meet again. I’ll pray for the family and the strength to get through this difficult process

Many hearts are broken. Gary was one of a kind - with kindness being his greatest virtue. His unassuming grin and twinkle in his eye were ever present and appreciated, as was his calming nature in our sometimes chaotic world. That corner of the lake with Elaine, recently Jimmy and now Gary, having passed from their earthy dwelling, will not be the same. He leaves behind many a built legacy as an expert carpenter but more importantly is his legacy as a wonderful son, brother, bil, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend. My deepest condolences to all who are grieving especially his children and beautiful grands ♥ May your many wonderful memories help you navigate through the difficult days ahead.
