Obituary of Charles Michael 'Quessy' Poulette

Poulette, Charles Michael (Quessy) 52, of We’koqma’q First Nation Community

Quessy’s heavenly journey started on the morning of Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital in Inverness, Nova Scotia. Quessy was born in Baddeck on December 17, 1971, to the late Charlie (Ja’li) and the late Margaret (Ma’kit) nee Sylliboy, both of We’koqma’q. Quessy was greeted in heaven by his mom and dad, whom he missed dearly; his baby sister Mary and by his two angel babies that he finally met for the first time. Quessy’s god-parents were the late Dorothy and Wilfred Michael of We’koqma’q. Even after their passing, Quessy stayed connected to his god brothers and his god sisters.

Quessy is survived or should I say, survived living with three sisters, Rosie, Charlotte, and Jennifer, customarily adopted siblings Christian (Monk) Phillips and Charlene Paul also of We’koqma’q. He is also survived by nephews Joshua and Judd Poulette and Grand-Nephews Colton, Riley and Hunter James.

Quessy leaves behind three godchildren: Trisha Googoo, Jeremy MacDonald and Drayvon Bernard. Quessy is also survived by his uncles Howard Poulette, Eskasoni and Maynard Poulette, We’koqma’q, Honorary Uncle John Paul of Membertou, and aunts Marie Sylliboy of We’koqma’q, Martha Brooks of Millbrook, Nancy Sylliboy, Sugar, Joanne, Mildred, Bridget, great-aunt Catherine Bernard and Honorary aunt Bessie Prosper, all of Eskasoni. He was predeceased by his uncle, Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy, aunts Theresa Cremo and Mary Ellen Phillips, all of We’koqma’q. He was also predeceased by Uncles Ben, Levi, Walter, David, Francis and aunts Betty, Rosie and Nancy May all of Eskasoni.

Chuck lived a simple life of work and play. He was a lifelong carpenter in his community. Quessy loved to hang out with his family and friends whether it was to watch Law and Order, play TV Bingo, play all night poker games, playing his air guitar or yelling out a hardy “WOO” after each Boston Bruins goal, but he especially loved to show off his spoon tapping skills when the right music was playing. Quessy was the proud Gate Keeper of our home base, Subdivision Rd. The headquarters is where regular ‘meetings’ would take place and his friends had lifetime memberships, but he let it be known that Mom will forever be the Subdivision Queen.

Quessy was a generous man. He sponsored many weekend stays in hotels for his grand nephews and their Kiju and Auntie Boo; he was also known to light up the skies on random evenings and quietly helping out those in need. He had spent the last year and 8 months taking good care of the family home and he honoured this responsibility very respectfully. Wela’liek Quessy Boy for being you and for all the memories! Chuck stories, we are sure, will be shared for many years to come.
 

Thank you to family and friends that came to pray, chill and support Chuck’s family during his stay at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital; we are forever grateful. A special thank you to all the nurses and hospital staff and The Osprey Angels who sat with our dear brother in his final days. Finally, a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Locke and Dr. Kathryn Binnersley for keeping us informed and guiding us on our brother’s welfare during this difficult journey. Wela’liek.

Visitation will take place at his home on 11 Subdivision Rd, We’koqma’q Mi’kmaw Community after 4:00 PM on Monday, May 13, 2024. Funeral Mass will take place at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in We’koqma’q at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, with Father Joby Augustin officiating. Cremation to follow. Burial will be held  10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2024 in Holy Trinity Parish Cemetery, We'koqma'q.

Sallite and meal will be held at the We’koqma’q Mi’kmaw School Gym. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh.
