Obituary of Steve Meade

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Steve Meade of Canso, NS. Steve was born in Antigonish but lived his entire life in Canso. He was 64 years old. We are comforted knowing he has found peace following a very short but courageous battle with cancer.

Left to mourn his loss are his wife, Bernice (Greencorn); son, Garth (Rena), adored grandchildren, Jack and Kendal; stepson, Mark Hanlon (Rosetta), Mark's son, Brandon Gosling (Monica) and stepdaughter, Jessica Hanlon. He is survived by his brother and longtime fishing partner, Jim (Marilyn); sisters, Suse (Dave), Shary (Bert), Ruth (Gavin), Maura (Chris); mother-in-law, Hazel Greencorn; brothers-in-law, Gordie, Terry (Laurie), Mitchell (Sherry); sisters-in-law, Lorraine (Bill), Donna (Johnny), Roberta (Clifford) and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved dog Lily. He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Marg (Kavanagh) Meade and by Bernice's father, Ed Greencorn.

Steve met the love of his life Bernice 35 years ago. They were thrilled when their son Garth was born, joining Mark and Jessica to complete their family.

Steve crossed both the Arctic Circle and the Equator on fishing boats and travelled the world with Bernice for both business (fishing) and pleasure. Although he disliked the process of travelling, he loved the destination. There was always a cold beer at the end of the journey to reward him for his efforts.

Steve loved to share stories about his adventures and experiences. He loved to have a good yarn with the gang any time. He was intelligent and wise beyond his years. He thought deeply about his family, his community and his industry. Young fisherman who honed their skills under his guidance welcomed and followed his advice with diligence.

There were no strangers in Steve's world. Over the years he entertained visitors from many countries. He loved to show off Canso Harbour and the surrounding islands to anyone wanting to get into his boat. But be prepared! The trip would be considerably longer than planned if a tuna happened to be spotted. Steve was an active and dedicated member of The Guysborough County Inshore Fisherman's Association for his entire career.

While Steve loved all children, two in particular captured his heart. Jack and Kendal will always be reminded of how much they were loved by their "Pup". To single out people who were important to Steve is impossible. The list is incredibly long. To his many friends, please know that he respected and valued you all.

A special thank you is extended to Dr. Chris Milburn. The comfort that you provided to us during this time made our road easier to navigate. The personal touch that you gave us will forever be appreciated. Paul and the crews of Nautical Odyssey and Sea Thunder, thank you for stepping up when you were needed.

Visitation will be held from 2-7 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, 2024, in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. As per Steve's wishes, a private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of one's choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
