Obituary of Bertha Odessa Hart
Bertha Odessa Hart
Manchester, Guysborough Co.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother & Nanny, Bertha Odessa Hart, of Manchester, Guysborough County at the age of 91. Bertha passed in the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home peacefully and surrounded by love on June 21, 2024, to be reunited with the love of her life, Willis, who predeceased her 56 years ago.
Born in Guysborough to the late Charles and Carrie (Dort) Pyle, Bertha was a loving Mom to both Steve and Bonnie who were the absolute lights of her life. After the tragic loss of her husband at the age of 35 and having a young family at home, Bertha went back into the work force eventually becoming well known at the Barn Restaurant for her "Bertha's Fried Chicken", the recipe being the best kept secret.
Only as adults did we realize how difficult of times must have been for Mom on her own and raising a family. Mom managed to make the best of life for us with love and support always. Christmas was Mom’s favorite time of year and because of the happy memories, it is ours too.
She loved a good Blue Jays game and loved to cook a meal for her family. Aside from being the best Mom, she was also the best Nanny, always having the treat cupboard well stocked, having sleepovers at her home and sometimes at Grant's Hotel, she never missed out on an opportunity to show her love and attention. Mom loved meeting new people whether at work, ball tournaments, Come Home Week, or driving her friends to Antigonish for appointments and chinese food. Mom loved to chat, especially on the phone and sometimes for hours.
Bertha is survived by her beloved children, Steve (Denise), St Andrews; Bonnie, Dartmouth; grandson, Cory (Sherry) and great-grandchildren, Rylan & Evan Calgary; step-grandson, Brandon (Marybeth) Tracadie. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Willis; sisters, Esther Day, Bessie Simpson; brother, Gordon Pyle; Cory's mom & her friend, Cathy Hart.
A special thanks to the RK MacDonald Nursing Home for the love and support shown to Mom for the past 11 years, you all made Mom’s final days comforting.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, in the Boylston Community Center. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 3 from Boylston United Church with Rev. Heather Manuel officiating. Burial will follow in Boylston Baptist Cemetery.
