Obituary of Sarah Katie MacLeod
Sadie Katherine MacLeod, Dartmouth/Bible Hill
It is with sadness that we announce the death of Sadie Katherine MacLeod (97), Lewis Hall, Parkland on the Lake, Dartmouth on November 11, 2024.
Sadie was born in River Denys, Cape Breton, on April 26, 1927 to Alexander (Sandy) MacLean and Jessie (MacGregor) MacLean of River Denys. She attended a one room school for grades 1 through 11. Upon completion of grade 11 in 1944, she attended the Nova Scotia Normal College to obtain a Permissive License, then taught at South Side River Denys School from 1944 to 1947. After marriage in 1947, she retired from teaching but, following the death of her husband, Malcolm, in an automobile accident, she returned to The Nova Scotia Normal College in 1953. Upon graduation in 1954, she taught school for 33 years in western Cape Breton, including 26 years at Whycocomagh Consolidated School. After 39 years of life in Whycocomagh, she moved to Bible Hill to be closer to her son, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. In 2019, she relocated to Parkland on the Lake Seniors facility in Dartmouth where she resided until her death. Sadie enjoyed photography, crafts, knitting, reading and volunteering with her church, Stewart United Church in Whycocomagh, and The Alderwood Nursing Home in Baddeck. Sadie was an active member of the United Church Women’s group in both Whycocomagh and Bible Hill. She especially enjoyed travel and visited all 10 Canadian provinces plus the Yukon, much of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, Russia, Poland, all of western Europe, including the United Kingdom and Ireland. She especially loved Scotland, having enjoyed 7 trips to the home of her ancestors. She was active in the Clan MacLeod Society and the Clan MacLean Society in Nova Scotia for over 30 years.
Sadie is survived by son, Malcolm, granddaughter, Alison (Jerome) Landry, great grandchildren, Hayleigh Janea MacLeod, Halifax, Nora, Oliver and Cameron Landry, Dartmouth, brother, Charles of Victoria, B.C. and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Malcolm John, River Denys, brother, John Dan (Jack) River Denys sister, Margaret, River Denys, sister Katherine, Antigonish, daughter-in-law Mary Ritcey-MacLeod, Dartmouth and grandson, Kevin Roderick MacLeod of Halifax.
Visitation will be held at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh on November 15, 2024 from 2 to 4 pm and from 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held at Forbes United Church, River Denys on November 16, 2024 at 11 am, with Rev Jim Mac Naughton officiating. Burial will follow the service at Fir Grove Cemetery in River Denys. A reception will be held in Valley Mills Fire Hall starting at 1 pm. The family wishes to thank the management and staff of Lewis Hall, Parkland on the Lakes, for the loving care that they gave to Sadie during her five- and one-half year residence in Lewis Hall.
