Obituary
Please share a memory of Annabelle to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
With the tea poured, knitting complete, her prayers all said for those living and dead our Mother; Annabelle (Farrell) Long earned her eternal rest. Surrounded with love Mom died Thursday, January 23, 2014 at her home in Guysborough at the age of 91. Born on October 9th, 1922 to the late John P. and Lydia Farrell, Mom grew up in Glencoe, Guysborough County, a community for which she held great pride and often returned to visit on her Sunday drives. Mom was the consummate host, her teapot always on and door open for the many that graced her with their visits. As rheumatoid arthritis and age afflicted her body she continued to give thanks for her blessings; never complaining she devoted her prayers for the needs of others rather than seeking God’s favour for herself. Mom’s favorite pastime was knitting and she received great pleasure in gifting her mittens and prized "crazy" socks for others to enjoy. She possessed an enthusiastic spirit, and when Mom took on a cause; whether it was selling hospital tickets or getting out the "Tory" vote, she gave it all. She was a hard worker who took in boarders and waited tables so as to provide for her family. Her wit and humorous antics contributed to her youthful spirit and made her endearing to many; particularly her grandchildren who loved Nanny’s feisty nature. Our mother was a woman of tremendous faith and it was that which sustained her following the tragic death of her son Edward at age 39. She grieved his loss and that of her son Wayne age two and infant son Joseph until her own death.
She was a beloved wife to the late Joseph Long and devoted mother to Regina (Jack) Hart, Guysborough, Arnold (Debbie) Dartmouth, Marcia (David) Connolly, Guysborough Intervale, Carmel (Glen) Avery, Guysborough, chosen daughter Diane (Shawn) Hadley, Guysborough and daughter-in-law Carla Rowan-Long, Charlottetown. She was a Nanny to Derek (Stephanie) Hart, Wade (Shannon) Hart, Wayne, Joanne, Spencer, Oliver, Rory, Joseph, Patrick, Shawn, Marybeth, Sarah and Daniel, and a great Nana-Belle to Olivia, Emily, Mason, Avery and Autumn. She is also survived by sister-in-law Mardie Kenny, and brothers-in-law Leo and Clarence (Irene) Long and many nieces and nephews.
Many of whom Mom loved and cherished have gone before her including her brother John Arthur, sister Mary-Alice, her special niece Anna MacKinnon and in-laws Annie and John Long.
The family wishes to extend sincere thanks for the care and devotion that her long-time friend and physician Dr. Anita Foley has given to our mother. Our appreciation is also extended to Drs. Bell and Ranjini, the wonderful nurses of Guysborough Memorial Hospital, her home support workers and the nurses of Continuing Care. Our mother was blessed with wonderful neighbors and many great friends who visited her often and for that we offer our heartfelt appreciation for all the kindnesses you had given her.
