Obituary of Florence Elizabeth Horton
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Mrs. Florence Elizabeth (Bette) Horton. Bette passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, in the Palliative Care Unit of St. Martha’s Regional Hospital on March 16 at the age of 89 years old.
Bette was born to the late Clair and Mary (nee Allen) Letcher in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia, on September 25, 1933.
Bette spent most of her life in Port Hawkesbury and Point Tupper, where she was an active member of the Lion’s Club and spent a few years working as the manager of Sears. In 1976, Bette and her family moved to Baddeck where she continued her career in retail and
volunteered with the Fire Ladies Auxiliary. She then spent time in Sydney, where she was a member of the IODE, before moving to Mulgrave in the 90’s, where she joined the UCW with Trinity United Church.
One thing that Bette will be remembered for by family and friends were the beautiful handmade cards that she created for every occasion. She spent many hours in her craft room cutting, stamping, and gluing; and everyone was delighted to receive a Bette creation for a
birthday, anniversary, holiday, or to mark an accomplishment. Bette was also an active member of the New Horizons Senior Group in Mulgrave, and spent many an afternoon playing cards and drinking coffee with her friends. It was something she looked forward to each week, and she was always quick to take someone’s dimes or don a costume for special events.
Bette was predeceased by brothers Clair, William, and Charles Letcher; husband Douglas Horton; and beloved daughter, Deborah (Horton) MacPhee. Bette will be fondly remembered by daughter & son-in-law, Sharon & Sean Reid of Mulgrave; grandchildren Matthew MacPhee
(Mellissa Dalley), Stephanie MacPhee, Robert Reid, Samantha Reid (Brad Long), and Heather Reid; treasured great-grandson Charlie Reid-Arbuckle; sister Jean Dutcher of New Brunswick; sister-in-law Pat MacKenzie, and nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend thank yous to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Palliative Care Unit at St. Martha’s.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at the Mulgrave and Area Resting Place on Friday, March 24 from 4-7p.m. Funeral service will be from Trinity United Church in Mulgrave on Saturday, March 25 at 11am with a reception to follow. Internment to take place at a later date. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
